Nevil Shute has written some of my favorite books but "The Far Country" falls short of his better novels. The story takes way too long to develop with little pay-off. The (eventual) romance between a young Englishwoman and an immigrant doctor in Australia was not credible or compelling to me, nor was the sub-plot about the doctor pursuing. Nevil Shute hated the post-war welfare state as it developed in England. In "The Far Country" England is depicted as a dreary land with little opportunity where people starve to death.
